Wood

95% of the wood used to make the handles comes from sustainably managed French forests. There is no excessive deforestation or air pollutionor long transport - all of which puts less strain on nature. The main timber supplier has its forest areas in the Jura region of France and is of course PEFC certified.

Stainless steel

The choice of steel is one of the most important materials for the knife itself. It determines the durability and quality of the blade itself. For Opinel knives, the high quality Swedish 12C27 steel (Sandvik) has been selected. This steel is highly resistant to corrosion and easy to maintain thanks to the addition of chromium. The addition of carbon in the steel (0.40%) ensures an excellent edge that holds its shape even when in contact with harder material without the need for sharpening.

The story of the iconic Opinel brand begins in the 19th century. During his travels, the merchant Victor-Amédée Opinel learned how to forge nails, which led him to establish the first forge in France. After his death, his son, Daniel, took over his craft and became the "sharp object maker" for the local farmers, simply because the blades of his sickles and scythes were the sharpest around. But the real Opinel pocket knife would have to wait a little longer to see the light of day. Daniel Opinel's eldest son, Joseph, decided to follow in his father's footsteps and , driven by a passion for handcraftingand cutting-edge technology, he decided to create an object that could be handmade using the most advanced technology available at the time. The year was 1890 and the right closing pocket knife was born, the Opinel.
