The human approach
Nordic Ware's beautiful cake moulds are made with visible care , thanks in part to the fact that they are also hand-finished during production . Nordic Ware has been perfecting the process of creating unique bundt cakes for over 70 years, so that the moulds are not only unique but also perfectly functional.
Material
The aluminium used to make the moulds is first melted at a temperature of 650°C and thenthen flows as a liquid into a holding chamber where a pressure arm pushes the liquid aluminium into the mould. This process has to be fast because it only takes a few seconds for the aluminium to solidify. The mould is then opened and the very hot but solid aluminium mould can be removed. Aluminium is very malleable, so Nordic Ware moulds can be shaped to the smallest detail.
Surface
Once the mould has been cast to the appropriate shape, it still has a long way to go, the next step is to trim the excess aluminium around the perimeter of the mould. The mould is then sent for further processing, where it goes through a series of finishing processes, includingvibratory deburring, corrosion protection spraying and surface roughening. The mould is then thoroughly washed, sprayed with a non-stick surface coating and cured using a PFOA-free resin .
The American brand Nordic Ware began its history in 1946 when the company was founded by David Dalquist, a metallurgical engineer with Swedish roots, and his wife Dorothy. However, it wasn't until 1950 that the company came to the attention of customers when a group of housewives visited David and asked him to create a classic cake mould that they knew from their European homelands. David granted their request and created the world famous Bundt, the patented name for the bundt cake mould. The next twist came in 1966. A prestigious baking competition (the Pillsbury Bake-Off) was held in Houston, USA, where contestant Ella Helfrich came 2nd. With a Nordic Ware mould with a hole in the middle, she baked the now iconic Fudge Tunnel recipe, which guaranteed fame not only for her but also for the Nordic Ware brand, which became an overnight hit.
Today, nearly 70 million households have a Nordic Ware mold , and that number is still growing. The company is headquartered in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where it also has a development centre. In fact, the Nordic Ware brand is constantly renewing its sales range with new shapes and seasonal moulds. When a mould is designed, a 3D model is first printed and then production begins. Everything from the creation to the dispatch of the product in one place.
